Oda is clearly setting usopp up to be commander level and the 5th strongest strawhat he has already been given the 5 highest bounty as a start and he will have to meet his father eventually plus out do him before the end of the series to do the he. It seems Yasopp decided to join Shanks because its the only way to achieve his dream by becoming the best sniper in the world.
Obviously he would want to see his father but you always got the feeling that he just wanted to be a pirate like his father. At this point in the series it seems that Yasopp Usopps father is not currently aware that his son is a pirate but I am very certain that at some point he shall learn of this and I think that he shall be pleased when he does. However I am also wondering how Usopp shall react when he finally meets his father which is likely to happen when the Strawhat.
